South Africa is a sports crazed nation, filled with an enormous and extremely enthusiastic sports following.
Among the most popular sports – both to watch and to participate in – are rugby, soccer, cricket, athletic marathons, tennis, surfing and golf.
There are three large sports stadiums in Cape Town where major local and international sporting events are hosted. These stadiums are the newly constructed Cape Town Stadium, which was especially built to host some of the matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, Newlands Rugby Stadium and the Newlands Cricket Grounds.
Thanks to the area’s pleasant Mediterranean climate, residents of the Cape lead an active, outdoorsy lifestyle. So in terms of leisure sport, there is plenty to do and residents love to participate in an array of outdoor activities.
Camps Bay, Clifton and Llandudno are stunning and popular beaches close to the city, while Muizenberg, Noordhoek, Kommetjie and Blaauberg are all popular surfing beaches. Cape Town has no less than 13 golf courses, including the impressive Steenberg Estate, Atlantic Beach Golf Course and the Erinvale Golf Course, which was designed by legendary local golfing champion Gary Player.
The beautiful scenery in the Cape serves as a splendid backdrop to the area’s many hiking, walking and biking trails. The Table Mountain National Park stretches across much of the terrain in the Peninsula and is home to many of these trails.
