If there is one thing that Capetonians love, it is indulging in a bit of retail therapy. Cape Town boasts a number of world-class shopping malls, brimming with incredible shops and boutiques that showcase both locally and internationally renowned retail brands. Some of the best shopping malls in the Cape Town area include Canal Walk, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cavendish Square and Tyger Valley Shopping Centre/Mall.
Canal Walk is a haven for shopping and entertainment. It is the largest regional shopping centre in the entire Africa. Located just off the N1 highway in Century City, halfway between the Cape Town CBD and Belville CBD, this large mall has over 400 shops, restaurants and cafés. It also contains the most speciality shops in the Southern Hemisphere. With its spectacular architecture, spacious malls, movie theatres and nearby Ratanga Junction themepark – complete with a roller coaster – Canal Walk attracts scores of local and international visitors and shoppers.
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront shopping mall, in the heart of Cape Town’s working harbour, is another favourite shopping destination among foreign visitors and locals alike. Visitors and shoppers at the V&A Waterfront will never lack for anything to do. The mall boasts an array of interesting shops, movie theatres and more than 80 restaurants serving up cosmopolitan cuisine that will suit any palate. Those in search of authentic, handcrafted African mementos are bound to find the perfect trinket at one of the stalls inside the ‘Red Shed’ Craft Workshop.
Cavendish Square Shopping Centre is an upmarket mall situated in Cape Town’s leafy Claremont suburb. This award-winning shopping mall has more than two hundred of the most elite shops in the country. Shoppers can browse around for the latest fashion/accessory brands, books, music, cosmetics, groceries, gifts, interior and homeware designs. Looking for entertainment? Cavendish has sixteen state-of-the-art cinemas, while the centre’s nineteen restaurants and coffee shops cater for all appetites.
A bit further afield, in Cape Town’s northern suburb of Durbanville, you will find the Tyger Valley Shopping Mall. This sprawling shopping centre boasts a wide range of lifestyle shops and leisure facilities. The shopping centre features 275 different shops, restaurants, a banking mall with bureau de change facilities, medical and dental offices and a Ster-Kinekor cinema complex.
